Is a bathroom remodel ever actually finished on time?

We're planning to redo our main bathroom and I keep hearing horror stories from friends about jobs that ran months over schedule. I'm trying to work out whether that's just how it goes or if it comes down to picking the right contractor. Did yours finish on schedule, and if not, what was the main cause of delays? Also, how much disruption should I expect in terms of days without a working bathroom? I'd rather plan realistically than assume it'll be fine.
